Detroit 9000 (1973)

Directed by Arthur Marks.
Starring Hari Rhodes and Alex Rocco.
IMDB
Arthur Marks was the director behind one of my favourite blaxploitation movies, "Bucktown" with Fred Williamson and Pam Grier. He also helmed the late entry Grier vehicle and relatively tame "Friday Foster" but was also responsible for the oddity called "J.D.'s Revenge" which combined horror elements with blaxploitation, making it one of the few films to do so outside of "Abby" and "Sugar Hill".
This is great stuff. Filmed on location in Motown.

Bare Knuckles (1977)

Directed by Don Edmonds.
Starring Robert Viharo and Gloria Hendry.
IMDB
Pretty much a perfect trailer. I haven't seen this film so I can't comment on its quality but this type of clip is what this site is all about. It's so perfectly of its time that it could have been one of those fake trailers as seen on Tarantino's "Grindhouse" film.
Don Edmonds is the guy who directed the notorious "Ilsa" films: "Ilsa, She Wolf Of The SS" and "Ilsa, Harem Keeper Of The Oil Shieks", so you know that exploitation cinema is his stock-in-trade.
Gloria Hendry, of course, was a big star in some of the biggest and best blaxploitation films of the 70's such as "Black Caesar" (with Fred Williamson), its sequel "Hell Up In Harlem" and "Black Belt Jones (with Jim Kelly).
Anyways, enjoy. This is what it's all about.

Penitentiary (1979)

Directed by Jamaa Fanaka.
Starring Leon Isaac Kennedy.
IMDB
This film seems to split people down the middle: they either love it or detest it. I'm in the former and I think it belongs on any list of tragically underrated films. There is so much grit coming at you that you'll be chiseling it off your shoulders for weeks.
This is some real low-budget fare but it's worth the ticket if you like prison films.
My Letterboxd Review:
Takes the word GREASY to a new, terrifying level. This is a pure sleazefest with a little boxing thrown in to exploit Rocky. And it works.

Black Shampoo (1976)

Directed by Greydon Clark.
Starring Gary Allen, Kelly Beau and Jack Meoff!!!
IMDB
This was Greydon Clark's first movie and it comes a bit late in the blaxploitation cycle and is largely forgotten nowadays. Clark would go on to direct the awesome 80's videogame movie called Joysticks in 1983.
Black Shampoo is definitely in the "Shaft" and "Slaughter" school of blaxploitation movies but it sort of veers into Jack Hill-esque ridiculousness. Highly recommended. It's available from VCI Video on DVD.

One Down, Two to Go (1982)

Directed by Fred Williamson.
Starring Fred Williamson, Jim Brown, Richard Roundtree, Jim Kelly and Joe Spinell.
IMDB
This film brings back three of the stars of 1974's "Three The Hard Way" and adds Richard "Shaft" Roundtree as well as the always great Joe Spinell who, of course, starred in the iconic slasher film "Maniac" as well as other great movies like "Walking The Edge" and Bill Lustig's "Vigilante".
This is also the first film Fred Williamson directed since "Mr. Mean" in 1977 and he would go on a bit of a run by directing 3 movies in the next year including "The Big Score" which would bring back Roundtree, Spinell as well as genre all-stars John Saxon and the late D'Urville Martin.
The tagline for One Down, Two To Go was "Forget the A-team. This is the kick-ass team!"
Be sure to hear one of Williamson's all-time great lines near the end of the trailer.
