My Letterboxd Review:

One of my favourite films. I've seen this three times now and it just gets better for me. Duke Mitchell is so sincere and charismatic, yet this movie plays on any level you want. It works as a (sorta) straight crime film. It works as a piece of exploitation. It works as a comedy. The opening scene is a wild piece of cinema as Mitchell and his buddy just cut through an entire office building killing everyone, but find themselves getting emotional and gentle when they run into a kid in an elevator. The whole movie does this juxtaposition so well - pure exploitive violence and sleaze mixed with this sincere attempt to say something about Italians, Catholics and family. Duke also kisses everyone on the lips - his father, friends, women, men, children. He also sings the majority of the songs, directs and narrates the film. It's a hell of a performance overall.

And when Duke gets on a rant, it's epic. "When you go to sleep I want you to sleep with one eye open. 'Cause I'm gonna choke you. I'm gonna choke your mother, I'm gonna choke your father, I'm gonna choke your fucking kids! You understand me? I'm gonna go to the fucking phone book and look up your last name. Everyone who has your last name is gonna get choked too."

If you're thinking that 1976 is a little late for a biker film, this was actually shot in 1972 (on 16mm film) and therefore is still steeped in that 60's counterculture vibe, much like Easy Rider, Vanishing Point etc.

Similar to those two aforementioned films, your sympathies are with the bikers which was a bit of a break from the usual motif in late 60's biker films. In fact, I would compare this more with something like Penelope Spheeris' 1984 film "Suburbia" which takes the viewpoint of punk rockers living in the barren wastelands of downtown L.A. during the peak of 80's hardcore. Just the very existence of the bikers (and in Suburbia, the punks) is enough to generate a small war from the cops and the rednecks looking to pin bogus crimes on them.

The trailer itself is decieving, basically reversing the sympathies and making it look like the town is defending itself against crazed bikers. But that's to be expected. It's easier to get butts in the seats for a classic vigilante style film.

But you don't have to be looking for political subtext to enjoy this film. At heart, it's still a fast moving and entertaining exploitation flick well worth tracking down. It's available from VCI on DVD in it's original full-frame (due to being filmed on 16mm) format.

Massacre at Central High (1976)

Believe it or not, this is the best looking video I can find on the net of this trailer.

A great film with an overwhelming Southern California vibe that you can watch over and over again. Forget Heathers. This is the craziest High School movie ever made. Check out the "Craig" character sporting an early John Tesh look. You just know this guy is going to meet a gruesome end.

There are some extremely inventive kills (handglider electrocution!!) and it's all harmless 70's fun, perfect for a Saturday afternoon. This gets played quite a bit here in Canada on the Scream and Drive-In digital channels. Definitely a must-see.
